Synonyms help improve the relevance and efficiency of queries in DigDash. They are primarily used for dimension or measure names and can be leveraged by various features:

• Creating charts via a natural language query or through DigDash Agent
• Dashboard creation assistant (matching with pre-configured dashboards)

For example, for a measure named Rev, you can enter the synonyms Revenue and Sales. Thus, the queries:

• "Revenue by region"
• "Sales by region"

will be interpreted the same way as:

• "Rev by region"

Synonyms can be entered by the user at the multi-language editing level of an element's name or in the Translation Manager, or imported from a synonyms dictionary.
Synonyms are available for all configured languages.

In order for synonyms to be taken into account during queries, it is necessary to enable their use in the server settings.

Enabling the use of synonyms

To enable the use of synonyms:

1. Go to the Configuration > Server Settings > Dictionaries & Languages > Synonyms Dictionaries page from the home menu.
2. Check the Use synonyms dictionaries for text query and/or Use synonym dictionaries in the dashboard wizard boxes.

Entering synonyms

Synonyms can be added by the user in different ways.

From multi-language edition

Synonyms can be added directly at the element's properties level by clicking the Multi-language edition button .


In some cases, this button is available in a toolbar (in which case, you must first select the object).

To enter synonyms:

1. Click the Multi-language edition button .

2. In the displayed box, select the tab for the language in which you want to enter synonyms.

3. Enter the synonym(s) in the Synonyms field. If you want to add multiple synonyms, place each one on a separate line.

4. Check the Use global dictionary box if you want the element's synonym to apply to all identical elements. The synonym will be added to the dictionary and will therefore be editable from the translation manager. See the Translation Manager page for more details.
   If the box is not checked, the synonym will be specific to the object.

From the Translation Manager

1. Open the Translation Manager.
2. Search for the element for which you want to add a synonym.
3. Display the Synonyms tab and then enter the synonym(s) in your chosen language. If you want to add multiple synonyms, place each one on a separate line.
   
4. Click OK.

Importing synonyms from a dictionary

It is possible to load a synonyms dictionary and import the synonyms of your choice from those offered.
